1914 (Thursday)

Western Front  ▶  Liège: Forts Barchon, Chaudefontaine and Evequee are silenced.  ▶  Longwy invested by the Germans.
Southern Front Obrenovats (Serbia) vainly attacked by Austrians, who lose guns in the retreat.
Naval and Overseas Operations HMS Amphion, British cruiser, sunk by German mine in North Sea. The Goeben and Breslau escape.
Political Great Britain: Mr. Asquith speaks in House of Commons on the War; Parliament votes £100,000,000.[a]

1915 (Friday)

Eastern Front Germans repulsed at Osovyets (Neuve Chapelle). Archduke Joseph Frederick enters Lyublin.
Southern Front Two divisions effect surprise landing at Suvla Bay and attack with Anzacs on right, and southern force on Achi Baba.
Political  ▶  345 British establishments declared "Controlled" under Munitions of War Act.  ▶  Combined Entente Note to Balkan States.[b]

  1. Speech in the House of Commons outlining the "infamous proposal" made by Germany with regard to Belgium, and defining our object: (1) To fulfil solemn international obligations, (2) to vindicate the rights of small nationalities against the aggression of larger Powers.
  2. The Note, to Bucharest, Sofia, Nish, Athens and Cettinje, proposed settlements of differences caused by 1913 war, based on condition of joining the Entente.
