1914 (Thursday)

Western Front  ▶  British fall back from St. Quentin.  ▶  Lille and Mézières occupied by the Germans.  ▶  Namur: Last of the forts reduced.  ▶  Ostend occupied by mixed British force (Marines, etc.).
Eastern Front Galicia: Russians capture Halicz and Tarnopol.
Naval and Overseas Operations  ▶  SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse sunk by HMS Highflyer.  ▶  SMS Magdeburg, German cruiser, destroyed in Gulf of Finland.
Political France: René Viviani's Ministry reconstructed: entry of Alexandre Millerand (War) and Théophile Delcassé (Foreign Affairs).
