1914 (Tuesday)

Western Front  ▶  Action at Villers-Cotterets: British 4th (Guards) Brigade checks German advance.  ▶  Soissons bombarded and occupied by Germans.
Eastern Front  ▶  East Prussia: General Russian withdrawal towards the Bug.  ▶  Galicia: Battle of Lemberg goes against the Austrians.
Political Russia: St. Petersburg renamed "Petrograd"

1915 (Wednesday)

Eastern Front  ▶  Germans storm Grodno.  ▶  Austrians enter Brody.  ▶  Russians concentrate round Vilna.
Asiatic and Egyptian Theatres Island of Ruad (between Latakia and Tripoli, Syria) is occupied by the French.
Political Serbia replies to communication of the Entente Powers, re settlement of Balkan question.  ▶  German acceptance of American demands re submarine warfare communicated by Count Bernstorff.[a]

  1. Germany states: "Liners will not be sunk by our submarines without warning and without ensuring the lives of non-combatants, provided that the liners do not try to escape or offer resistance." Question of reparation left for further discussion.
