Great War events that took place on 18 September.

1914 (Friday)

Home Front Part 57 of The Great War periodical is published. This week's edition covers "The French Advance Towards Lens and the Battle of The Labyrinth."
Western Front The Aisne: Heavy fighting round Noyon and Reims.
Eastern Front Poland: Russians take Sandomierz.
Naval and Overseas Operations South-west Africa: British occupy Lüderitz Bay (which Germans had evacuated militarily on 10 August).
Political  ▶  Great Britain: Parliament prorogued: King George's speech.[a]  ▶  Mr. Asquith's Edinburgh speech.

  1. The King's Speech at the Prorogation of Parliament roused remarkable enthusiasm, members rising in their places and singing the National Anthem. "We are fighting for a worthy purpose, and shall not lay down our arms until that purpose has been fully achieved."
