Naval and Overseas Operations South-west Africa: British occupy Lüderitz Bay (which Germans had evacuated militarily on 10 August).
Political  ▶  Great Britain: Parliament prorogued: King George's speech.[a]  ▶  Mr. Asquith's Edinburgh speech.

  1. The King's Speech at the Prorogation of Parliament roused remarkable enthusiasm, members rising in their places and singing the National Anthem. "We are fighting for a worthy purpose, and shall not lay down our arms until that purpose has been fully achieved."
