1914 (Friday)

Western Front  ▶  Indian troops begin an attack on the Germans round Givenchy (La Bassée); a five days' battle commenced.  ▶  French pressure towards Péronne.
Eastern Front Galicia: Austrians recover Lupkow Pass over the Carpathians.
Naval and Overseas Operations German cruiser SMS Friedrich Karl reported lost in Baltic.
Political  ▶  Egypt: Hussein I proclaimed Sultan.[a]  ▶  Meeting of three Scandinavian Kings at Malmo.  ▶  Great Britain: Conviction of Adolf Ahlers quashed.[1]

  1. British Protectorate declared in Egypt; abolition of Turkish suzerainty. Deposition of Khedive Abbas Hilmi owing to anti-British intrigues; Khediviate with title of Sultan of Egypt offered to, and accepted by, his uncle, Prince Hussein Kamel, second son of Ismail Pasha.
  1. Adolf Ahlers, naturalised British subject and German Consul at Sunderland, had been sentenced to death for high treason for having incited and assisted German reservists to return to Germany.
