1914 (Wednesday)

Western Front Russians end their retreat and make stand on Bzura-Ravka-Pilitza line (30 miles south-west of Warsaw).
Naval and Overseas Operations Hartlepool, Whitby and Scarborough bombarded by German warships.[a]

Notes

  1. Scarborough: enemy cruisers attacked the town about 8 a.m. Entered Scarborough Bay under the cover of dawn and mist. Bombardment lasted half and hour, 18 people killed, 100 wounded. Whitby: bombarded the same day about 9 a.m. for half and hour. The abbey and private property was slightly damaged. No damage of military importance.
