Naval and Overseas Operations SMS Emden appears at Penang and destroys Russian cruiser Zhemchug.
Political  ▶  Great Britain: Resignation of Prince Louis of Battenberg from office of First Sea Lord.[a]  ▶  Trial of Archduke's murderers at Sarajevo.

  1. Admiral Prince Louis of Battenberg, owing to totally unfounded suspicions regarding his nationality and loyalty, resigns office as First Sea Lord, and is succeeded by Lord Fisher.
