Western Front  ▶  Battle of Flanders begins, a desperate struggle for the coast lasting for some six weeks and including (a) Battle of the Yser, 16 October, seq. (b) Battle of Ypres, 19 October, seq.  ▶  Paris heavily bombed.  ▶  Cavalry fighting near Hazebrouck.
Eastern Front  ▶  Poland: Germans take Sochaczew.  ▶  Galicia: Russians forced to raise the siege of Przemyśl, which is reprovisioned from Cracow.  ▶  Austrians recover Jaroslau.
Naval and Overseas Operations Russian cruiser Pallada sunk by German submarine SM U-26 in the Baltic.
