Great War events that took place on 5 March.

1915 (Friday)

Western Front  ▶  French attack on German positions at Hartmannsweilerkopf.  ▶  Zeppelin wrecked near Tirlemont.
Eastern Front  ▶  Germans concentrate strong forces between Thorn and Mlava.  ▶  Russians cross the Bistritza (eastern Carpathians) and threaten Austrian flank.
Southern Front Dardanelles: Narrows forts bombarded by HMS Queen Elizabeth from Gulf of Saros; fort L blown up and others damaged.
Naval and Overseas Operations British warships bombard Smyrna under Admiral Peirse (see 9 March).
Political  ▶  German Note issued an answer to attempt of United States to mitigate rigours of war zone.  ▶  Issue of £50,000,000 3% Exchequer Bonds announced.  ▶  Greek Premier (M. Venizelos) proffers Greek fleet and troops to Entente for operations at the Dardanelles (see 15 February, 6 March and 21 September).  ▶  Sir John Jellicoe, commander-in-chief of the Grand Fleet, is promoted to Admiral.[1]
