1914 (Thursday)

Western Front  ▶  Battle round Roye: Vain German efforts to break the French line.  ▶  St. Mihiel: French destroy bridge made over Meuse.  ▶  Antwerp: Fort Waelhem silenced.  ▶  British Expeditionary Force begins to leave The Aisne and move west and the north.
Eastern Front East Prussian Frontier: Russians recover Augustovo and begin a nine-days' attack (Battle of Augustovo) on the retreating Germans.
Political  ▶  Italy: Protest against Austrian mine-laying.  ▶  Turkey: Closing of the Dardanelles.
