Western Front

• Battle of Flanders begins, a desperate struggle for the coast lasting for some six weeks and including (a) Battle of the Yser, 16 October, seq. (b) Battle of Ypres, 19 October, seq.
• Paris heavily bombed.
• Cavalry fighting near Hazebrouck.

Eastern Front

• Poland: Germans take Sochaczew.
• Galicia: Russians forced to raise the siege of Przemsyl, which is reprovisioned from Cracow.
• Austrians recover Jaroslau.

Naval and Overseas Operations

• Russian cruiser Pallada sunk by German submarine U-26 in Baltic.
