5 August Appointed the position Secretary of State of War.
6 August Plan to increase the ranks of the regular army with volunteers was approved by Parliament to an of increase of 500,000 men.
25 August First Speech in Parliament.
9 November Speech given at the Lord Mayor's Guildhall Banquet, responding to the toast "The Imperial Forces of the Crown." [1][a]
