Eyewash

From The Great War On This Day

Eyewash: Humbug. Sham. Deceit. Flattery. Any merely complimentary outward show. "Eye-witness," in one his letters from the Western Front, refers to the term as being used by way of derision, in particular with regard to certain official circulars and memoranda dealing with trivial matters of dress and ceremony.[1]
