Dog fight

From The Great War 1914-1918

Dog fight: An aeroplane squadron battle. Its apparent reckless ferocity at furious speed, with wild manœuvring and crashes, suggested the similarity to a confused mélée of fighting dogs (Air Force phrase).[1]
