  1. British Protectorate declared in Egypt; abolition of Turkish suzerainty. Deposition of Khedive Abbas Hilmi owing to anti-British intrigues; Khediviate with title of Sultan of Egypt offered to, and accepted by, his uncle, Prince Hussein Kamel, second son of Ismail Pasha.
  2. Adolf Ahlers, naturalised British subject and German Consul at Sunderland, had been sentenced to death for high treason for having incited and assisted German reservists to return to Germany.
