1914

Events preceding British Declaration of War

  • Count Tisza makes statement in Hungarian Chamber concerning relations with Serbia: they "must be cleared up".[1]

1915

  • Template:WF - Failure of Germans in attempt to reach left bank of Yser results in heavy losses.
  • Template:EF - New German offensive towards Riga develops. Germans storm line south of Zielovna (near Przasnysz), and force Russians to retreat towards the Narev.
  • Template:SF - Italian offensive in Upper Cadore develops (Dolomites).
  • Template:PO - Strike of Welsh miners begins.

1916

  • Template:WF - British advance continued; capture of Delville Wood, penetrate to Bois des Foureaux and outskirts of Pozieres; 2,000 prisoners taken; second defence lines penetrated; British cavalry in action.
    •  South of Somme, Germans re-enter Biaches and La Maisonette, and are again driven out by French.
  • Template:EF - Riga front Russians, supported by sea and land artillery, make slight advance west of Kemmern.
    •  Southern Lutsk salient Russians under Sakharov, anticipating Austrian offensive, attack them on Upper Styr.
  • Template:AE - Russian right wing, under General Yudenich, occupies Baiburt; the left drives back Turks south-west of Mush.

1917

  • Template:WF - German assault on captured positions on Mont Haut (Moronvillers) defeated.
  • Template:EF - Enemy opposition stiffening in Galicia; slight enemy success south of Kalusz.
  • Template:SF - Italian raid in the Carso, 275 prisoners.
  • Template:PO - Crisis in Russia: resignation of four Ministers of Cadet Party, as protest against recognition of the Ukraine.

1918

  • Template:WF - Second Battle of the Marne begins'. Great German offensive on front of 50 miles east and west of Reims, from Chateau-Thierry on west to Main de Massiges on east. On east Germans held in check. On west Germans penetrate two or three miles on 20-mile front; cross Marne between Dormans and Fossoy (west of Chateau-Thierry).
    •  Americans repulse Germans at Vaux.
  • Template:NO - British transport Barung sunk by German submarine. French transport Djemnah torpedoed and sunk in Mediterranean, 442 lost.
  • Template:PO - Field-Marshal Conrad von Hotzendorf (Austria) placed on retired list.
