This is a documentation subpage for Template:Wiktionary.
This is a reference template for use in bodies of text where referencing Wiktionary is required. This would be the case when writing about the etymology of a word or phrase.
Usage
Type/copy the following {{wiktionary|title=|date=}} to create a reference included between the <ref>...</ref> tags. The one and only parameter is for the name of the word to be referenced on Wiktionary. It must be written exactly as it is used there.
Example
An example would be <ref>{{wiktionary|title=war|date=1 January 2023}}</ref> which produces the following:
- The word War, which means the organised, large-scale, armed conflict between countries or between national, ethnic, or other sizeable groups, usually but not always involving active engagement of military forces, comes from the Late Old English word werre of the same meaning.[1]
Note: The word war is not capitalised in the reference. In this case as Wiktionary has several pages relating to this word - war, War, WAR, wär, and war-. This example links to the first instance. Linking to the wrong page will produce an inaccurate reference. Always double-check the correct word being used in the "title" parameter.
