Stanislau, as it was then known to the British, was a city in Galicia, the historical region in southeastern Poland and western Ukraine.
During the war it was known as Stanisławów (Stanislau), part of the Austrian Empire. For a short period between November 1918 and May 1919, it was known as Stanyslaviv, part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. Before and since then, it has changed political hands on numerous occasions until 1991, when the city was named Ivano-Frankivsk, in what is present-day independent Ukraine.
