From The Great War 1914-1918

The term Specialists referred to officers and other ranks trained for any particular work such as bombers and Lewis gunners, etc. Also occasionally used sarcastically of men pleading other employment in order to evade ordinary duty. Similarly used in the Navy for gunnery, torpedo officers and others.[1]
