Midshipman (rank)

From The Great War On This Day

Midshipman: The highest rank of petty officer on board a ship of war, next below that of lieutenant, who holds the king's commission. Midshipmen are educated at the Royal Naval College. When they have passed all tests, they are ready for promotion to a lieutenancy.[1]
