CIV: The initials of the name of the historic "City Imperial Volunteers" of the Boer War. The Navy adopted the initials as a nickname for the five years' service men, specially entered under Lord Selborne's régime at the Admiralty not long after the Boer War. They were alternatively called "Shelborne's Light Horse" (see Ticklers). [1]
