The Imeprial War Museum allows downloading of standard-resolution images, including the embedding of films or sound recordings from the IWM website free of charge, for your own private and Non-Commercial use, under the IWM Non-Commercial Licence. In this licence the IWM use the term "Information" to mean all the types of files you can use. They encouraged to use the Information available under this licence, freely and flexibly, within these conditions. Files covered by this licence that are made available for use can be found at Collections Search applying the filter "Share and Reuse". These are indicated mainly as © IWM or © Crown Copyright: IWM, and are known as IWM attribution statements (see below)
In a nutshell, you can
- Copy, publish, distribute and transmit the Information for private and Non-Commercial purposes; and
- Download, embed or link to any Information for Non-Commercial purposes (providing certain conditions are met).
Providing attribution
One such condition of use is that the Information source is acknowledged by specifying the IWM attribution statement in accordance with this licence. On IWM’s Collections Online, the attribution statement is shown directly under the media. It starts with the copyright symbol, followed by numbers and letters, such as: © IWM HU 102374, © IWM A 33866, and © IWM MGH 3773. The correct use of this template will link directly to the Information source.
Please note
The IWM do not permit the use of high-resolution images online.
